Why You Need This System
Many times in the last twenty years, our company has been called to inspect water storage facilities where bacterial problems existed in the water system.
In most cases a sanitary survey had been conducted and any existing sanitary problems, at ground level, were identified and corrected. BUT, the problem persisted.
Bacterial problems will often show up for only a few days in the fall and then just go away. This can happen in both chlorinated and non-chlorinated systems.
The prime suspect is a back flow situation that of course can not be found. The real culprit, however, is a gradual and steady loss of water quality in storage that only appears to happen suddenly.
There are several factors which contribute to poor water quality. Thermal stratification of the water is one.
Tall standpipes are the most susceptible to stratification, but a certain amount takes place in all water storage facilities.
As temperatures warm in the spring, and the average day and night temperatures become warmer than the water being put into storage, the stored water begins to separate into layers or thermal zones, with the warmest and therefore the lightest water on top.
This will not change all summer!
The water that is on top in late April will still be there in September.
This simple fact sets the stage for sanitation problems in the fall. The problems don’t actually happen in the fall, they just show up then.
Stratified warm surface water in storage provides a nearly ideal atmosphere for bacterial growth, which is Moisture, Warmth and Time. All that is needed is a steady supply of nutrients and a little bacteria to develop a bacterial soup in the top four or five feet of water. This soup can develop over several months time and not cause any sample problems until the weather cools in the fall. A few cool days and nights will lower the temperature of stored water to less than that of the water coming into the tank. The old surface water sinks, is carried off into distribution and then you have sample problems.
Our triple check positive retention system will help to keep thermal stratification at a minimum.
